Understanding Motivation

When it comes to motivation, we must understand the we all do different thing for different reasons. Two primary types of motivation are:

INTRINSIC MOTIVATION 

EXTRINSIC MOTIVATION

This type of motivation is comes from more internal desires, such as self stimulation (enjoyment) or personal reward/accomplishment.

This type of motivation is inspired by external factors, such as hoping to get a reward or to impress someone of than yourself.

Do things you enjoy!

The American College of Sports Medicine recommends using lifestyle forms of physical activity in order to increase adherence and enjoyment for physical activity, like hiking or playing your favorite sport!

Set attainable goals!

If you are just getting started on your fitness journey, it is always good to remember to work at your own pace.  Setting attainable goals will not only help you with motivation, but will also help your confidence levels.

Educate yourself!

Educational fitness programs have shown to increase enjoyment, while increasing awareness! Not many people are informed on all of the health benefits that are associated with physical activity.

Stay away from the average health promotions!

Health promotions has shown to add societal pressure, which then impairs participation and adherence for physical activity.

Change your environment!

The type of environment that you surround yourself in can have a huge impact on your behavior. Can't make healthy choices in a house full of junk food!
